A Fun Family Summer Day At Katie's Krops

Hi, Lovely Readers!

I hope everyone is having a great week. I have been focused on homeschooling and things in our home. It has been harder than I imagined. Having 4 children has been a balancing act. It is a blessing to be a stay at home mom and a housewife. I wouldn't change it for anything. So this is one of the reasons I haven't made a blog post in a while. I hope you enjoy a look back at a fun day we had during the summer in 2021. There are some cute photos at the bottom so keep scrollling.

On June 11th, 2021, our family enjoyed attending Katie's Krops outdoor classroom. I signed up to make pico de gallo and tortilla chips with Jason "beef" Keefe (MasterChef season 10 finalist). The whole set up was so awesome. They had everything laid out on 5 tables.

Jason was our instructor, and he taught the children about the meaning behind pico de gallo. He asked for a volunteer to draw a rooster and a volunteer to write pico next to it on the chalkboard. Lily drew the rooster on the chalkboard. It was so cute that she was chosen to draw it. She thought she was so special, and she was proud of her drawing.

After, Jason introduced himself, and he explained what we were going to do. We all picked some tomatoes and a giant onion from the garden. The tables already had garlic, lime, cilantro, salt, pepper, jalapeños (or you could use green pepper), and other tools to help make the food.

It may have been a simple task, but it helped the children learn many techniques and skills. Lily and Seth haven't used a sharp knife before. This was their first time. Jason was very helpful in showing everyone how to use certain knife skills and how to be safe while cutting. I believe he did a wonderful job directing the children. Our children loved cutting and mixing the ingredients together. They learned how to use a tool to squeeze a lime to get the juice out. Everyone received a different kind of juicing tool. We had the manual kitchen juicer for limes or lemons. Lily and Seth also used a zester to add lime zest into the mixture. We tried to get Jude to join in on the fun, but we wasn't into it. I think it was nap time. He just watched us.

Jason asked the children to cut a small stack of tortillas into fourths. Then, he fried them to make homemade tortillas. He sprinkled salt on them. They all loved it with the pico de gallo.

The last step was getting a mystery bag of some kind of secret ingredient. Each table chose 1 mystery bag. Seth chose a bag of pineapple. Instead of adding it to our pico de gallo, Aaron and our kids ate it by itself. They had different ones like strawberries, avocado, and peaches.

I think Aaron and I even learned a thing or two while we were there. Seeing the smiles and laughter of our children just made me realize that I need to teach my children more about how to do things around the home & let them get involved more. It just shows how much we need to teach our children on our own just the way the Lord told us in the bible.

Our children have learned so much by this simple family cooking class. I can't wait to get into the kitchen more with Lily and Seth to show them what my mother taught me.

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

Thank you for everything, Katie, Stacy, & your team! We can't wait to go to another outdoor classroom event.

If you haven't already checked out her website, please check it out.

I'll add the link it here.

They have different events every month. Also, they need volunteers for their garden to help with it and maintain it all year. They give back to the community with their harvest.
